The 01J Multitronic transmission in some Audi A4 and A6 vehicles is distinct due to the location of the Transmission Control Module (TCM) inside the transmission. Early units feature a 25 pin TCM connector, while later units have a round 20 pin TCM protruding from the rear of the unit. Notably, this transmission does not utilize a torque converter; instead, it employs a dual mass flywheel or a flywheel/damper plate assembly, depending on the engine size. Additionally, it utilizes a drive chain, a unique feature in CVT applications. The TCM operates external relays through the same harness connecting to the back of the transmission case and communicates with other modules over the CAN Network.
