[WATCH] Insane Nissan S15 SR20DET Valve Cover Restoration

Every single guy who has ever turned a wrench knows that stomach-dropping feeling. You’re working on an aluminum block, you apply just a little too much leverage, and snap. You’re left staring at a broken piece of hardware lodged deep inside the threads, wondering why you didn’t just leave well enough alone.

For a lot of weekend warriors, that’s where the project stalls out. But that’s exactly where our long-time buddy Steve over at Restore It starts his latest project.

We’ve partnered with Steve for years because his philosophy on fixing things is exactly the same as ours: do it right, or don’t do it at all. He is the gold standard for what a real restoration looks like, and this legendary Nissan Silvia S15 SR20DET valve cover is no exception. He doesn’t just hit a greasy engine part with a wire wheel and a can of rattle-spray.

In this video, Steve takes an absolute mechanical nightmare and completely transforms it. He carefully center-punches and extracts the broken bolt, saving the JDM aluminum casing. From there, it’s a masterclass in proper rebuilding.

A few things to watch out for in the video:

  • The Baffle Plate Upgrade: Instead of just working around them, Steve completely dismantles the unit, washing it in a parts washer. He drills out the cheap factory rivets holding the internal baffle plates and actually taps the holes for machine screws. It’s a massive upgrade over the original 90s hardware.
  • The Prep & Powder Coat: Restoration videos are basically ASMR for car guys, and the refinishing process here is incredibly satisfying to watch. After some meticulous surface prep, he lays down a chrome powder coat base, follows it up with a vibrant transparent purple, and then carefully wet-wipes the raised Nissan lettering while it’s still tacky so the chrome shines through perfectly.

It takes a lot of time, patience, and the right tools to take a basket case part and make it look better than it did when it rolled off the assembly line in Japan.

Grab a coffee, hit play below, and enjoy watching a piece of automotive history get brought back to life.

Cheers!
