Common Tractor Problems and How to Fix Them

Tractors are built simply enough that most faults trace back to a handful of systems: fuel, air, electrical, hydraulic, and cooling. Knowing the usual suspects in each system turns a machine that won’t start or won’t lift into a short list of things to check rather than an open-ended problem.

The Engine Won’t Start

Then check the filters, since a clogged hydraulic filter is a very common cause of slow lift and weak remotes. Cold, thick fluid produces the same symptoms until the system warms.

Beyond those, look for external leaks at hoses and fittings, and consider the pump and relief valve if the system is weak across all functions. If one function is weak and the others are fine, the problem is in that circuit rather than the pump.

The Three-Point Hitch Won’t Lift Or Won’t Hold

A hitch that lifts slowly usually shares causes with general hydraulic weakness. A hitch that lifts but drifts down under load points to internal leakage past the lift cylinder seals or the control valve. Check the draft and position control linkages first, since they go out of adjustment over time and the adjustment procedure is straightforward when you have the specification.

The Clutch Slips Or The PTO Won’t Engage
